The EV market has witnessed considerable growth in the past two years, with the International Energy Agency indicating 6.6 million EVs being sold in 2021 globally as compared to 3 million in 2020.
A significant rise in sales was recorded despite the ongoing semiconductor chip shortage across the industry and COVID-19 restrictions.
China has taken the crown in terms of sales, accounting for nearly 12% of the total EV sales in 2021, whereas Norway is the global leader in EV adoption, recording more than 80% of the total new cars sold in the country being EVs.

Coming to Australia, the country has recorded staggering growth in EV sales. The country tripled its total EV sales in 2021 to 20,665, as against 6,900 EVs sold in 2020.
Tesla's Model 3 was the bestselling electric car in Australia, with 12,094 vehicles sold in 2021. MG ZS took the second position with 1,388 and the Mitsubishi Outlander with 592.

Australia shifting gears
The country may witness the launch of many EV models before the end of 2022. Toyota, the largest new vehicle retailer in the region, has claimed to launch around 30 EVs across the Toyota and Lexus brands by 2030.
