The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 (XJO) is Australia’s primary stock market index. It consists of the 200 largest ASX listed stocks listed on the ASX (S&P/ASX 100 plus an additional 100 stocks). The index has been regarded as the institutional investable benchmark for Australian equity performance. The index is representative, liquid, and tradable and addresses the needs of investment managers to benchmark against a portfolio characterised by sufficient size and liquidity. Listed companies under the index range in size from ~AU$380 million to more than AU$100 billion and account for a huge chunk of Australia’s share market capitalisation. S&P/ASX 200 offers optimum diversification. As of April 2021, stocks pertaining to all the 11 GICS (Global Industry Classification Standard) Sectors are available on the index. The financial and material sector own almost half of the index. The constituents of the index are subject to change, depending on the quarterly rebalancing by the index operator (S&P).
