Summary

  • One can find share prices on the portals of stock exchanges like NASDAQ or NYSE.
  • Historical quotes and the performance of companies are also provided on the sites.
  • NASDAQ and NYSE are the two major stock exchanges, with around 80% of all the publicly listed companies in the US.

Many people invest in stocks these days. Of course, stock investment requires diligent allocation of funds. But before investing, the critical task is to collect accurate information about stocks like prices, earnings statements, or balance sheet.

Hence, the best source for such information is the stock exchanges, where companies are listed, and the stocks get traded. The U.S. has two major stock exchanges that have around 80 percent of all the public companies listed. These are NASDAQ and NYSE.

NASDAQ and NYSE Stock Exchanges

Various resources are available to get stock quotes or stock prices. Today, hundreds of sites provide stock prices, financial information, performance analysis and opinions, and recommendation.

NASDAQ, or the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations, was founded in 1971 as the world’s first electronic stock market. NASDAQ started online trading in 1998. It has around 3,554 companies listed on it presently. Its website nasdaq.com presents comprehensive information about the stocks in real-time.

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) was founded in 1790 in New York. It has around 2,800 companies listed on it. It is the largest U.S. stock exchange in term of market capitalization.

Earlier, it was not easy to collect stock price information. Now, digital technology has made it possible to obtain that information while sitting at home in real-time without paying any charge.

The Internet has made online trading possible for anyone who wants to invest money in stocks. Today, online trading is a commonly used option for stock investment.

Where is the stock information on NASDAQ?

The opening page of nasdaq.com has a search option. Once the company name or the symbol is entered, it will take you to another page containing information about the share price of that particular stock, market cap, company information, and other vital data.

On the top of the page appears the company name, ticker symbol, real-time share price, date, time, and time zone. Right under it, on the left side of the price chart, various options are listed, such as summary, charts, news, press release, dividend history, historical quotes, and many others.

For example, in the summary section, one can find the real-time, after-hours, and premarket charts. The charts provide a technical and fundamental analysis of a specific stock. One can choose the NASDAQ Composite, NASDAQ 100, and S&P 500 index to compare with the stock performance.

The line-and-bar graph shows the shares' price and volume movement. This detail is shown for different time intervals: one day, five days, one month, three months, six months, one year, two years, five years, YTD, and Max (since listing). Thus, it is an excellent place to scour all essential details in one go.

In addition, the drop-down menu offers various other options to find technical information about a specific stock, like its ups and downs.

In the Historical Quotes section, one can find the daily closing price of a particular stock and its trading volume since its listing.

Dividend history shows the dividend payment date, amount, declaration, ex-dividend, etc. Dividend payment is an important part to consider while checking for share price and choosing stocks to invest.

Under financial details, annual and quarterly results are available for the companies, and fundamentals can be analyzed from here, such as revenue, sales, net profit/loss, cash flow and balance sheet.

Information on the P/E ratio is also provided there, under the section called P/E and PEG Ratio. The P/E and PEG ratios are also used to gauge the company's performance.

In the Revenue option, one can get details about revenue, dividend, and EPS for the current or the past three or the next three years. It is an excellent place to understand a company's growth.

Collecting data from the NYSE portal

The NYSE provides all information on a single page on the nyse.com website. But there is a time gap of around 15 minutes. So, on nyse.com, a search box appears on the top right corner of the page. After writing the company's name or the ticker symbol in the search box, a new page opens with the stock details.

Under the QUOTE options, one can find the company name, ticker symbol, the current share price, trade volume, and high/low price for the day.

Next is the CHART option. It has all the technical analysis features such as markers for stock splits, dividends and earnings, candlestick, moving average, and many other technical standards to analyze the price movement in different periods starting from minute, day to years.

Next is Historic price, where one can view one-year historical price data in daily, weekly and monthly formats on the same page. Also, data dating back to nearly four decades can be found there.

Next to Quotes comes the Option Trading Option. Again, it is for experienced investors or experts.

Historical quotes and performance

Historical share quotes were not readily available until a few years ago. Now with the technology advancing, more and more information is available online for the users.

The investor can use past share price data to analyze patterns in the company's performance. In addition, the price-performance data could help analyze other internal or external factors.

Past performance is not always indicative of future performance, as experts say. However, it is essential to dig into historical data. Fundamental and technical analysis is done based on the company's past data to evaluate and anticipate the company's future growth. While analyzing the stock, it is essential to look for the broader fundamentals and not just the price factor alone.
