Social media on Monday exploded with Tom Brady-centric jokes after he announced a comeback from retirement just weeks after he called it quits to his illustrious NFL career.

Twitterities speculated that the cryptocurrency market’s disastrous performance may have forced the famed NFL quarterback and Bitcoin advocate to give up his retirement plans, according to tech news portal u.today.com.

Brady's retirement lasted for a little more than a month. He had announced his retirement in a heartfelt Twitter post on Feb 1.

On Sunday, the 44-year-old shared that he will be playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during his 23rd season. Brady had signed with Tampa Bay in 2020 after spending around 20 years with the New England Patriots.

In a Twitter post, Brady wrote: "These past two months I have realized my place is still on the field and not in the stands." And "That time will come. But it's not now."

He added that "I love my teammates, and I love my supportive family. Without them, none of this is possible. I’m coming back for my 23rd season in Tampa. We have unfinished business."

Tom Brady’s crypto investments

Brady and his supermodel wife Gisele Bündchen had invested in crypto exchange FTX in June last year, describing himself as a big believer in crypto.

Brady saw his retirement as an opportunity to focus on his NFT platform, Autograph, which he launched last August. Brady entered the crypto space last May. According to u.today.com, he even added "laser eyes" to his Twitter profile photo to mark his foray into cryptocurrency.

Brady’s start-up Autograph has secured partnerships with Hollywood stars like Simone Biles and Tony Hawk. His fans speculated that the NFL legend might go full-time crypto after quitting his football career.

The cryptocurrency market was down 0.41% to US$1.72 trillion on Monday afternoon. Bitcoin’s (BTC) price gained 3.04% to US$38,708.77 in the last 24 hours.
