Kiro would take the charge of the office in October, the fourth female and the first Māori to hold the designation.

New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern stated that she was happy to see Kiro taking up the job. For several years, Kiro has reflected her dedication for the welfare of children and youth of the country. She has a long and illustrious career and is reckoned with substantial contribution in numerous areas of work.

A brief intro of Cindy Kiro

Cindy Kiro, who was born in 1958 in Whangārei and is the eldest of 6 children, is of Ngā Puhi, Ngāti Kahu, and Ngāti Hine descent. She is currently heading the Royal Society Te Aparangi.

She has worked as the Children's Commissioner from 2003-09, for Ministry of Education from 2014-18, and led the Welfare Expert Advisory Group from 2018-19.

Moreover, in 2021, Kiro had been chosen as a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for rendering services in the field of child well-being and education.

Inspiration to Māori women

Kiro was overwhelmed and opined that hailing from a humble background, she understands the value of hard work and perseverance, which help a person climb the ladders of success.

Young Māori girls could seek inspiration and encouragement to work towards achieving their goals in life.

Kiro further added that she would be carrying out the work across strategic programme in her new role.

Responsibility of the Governor-General

Apart from being Queen’s representative, NZ’s Governor-General is supposed to give the Royal Assent to any legislation which has been passed in the Parliament. The Governor-General is also responsible for reading out from the throne the speech of the newly elected government.
