Facebook Inc (Nasdaq:FB) in collaboration with Ray-Ban maker EssilorLuxottica has created smart glasses that can take calls, play music, capture photos, and short videos. Facebook launched the Ray-Ban Stories smart glass series on Thursday.

The starting price of these glasses is US$299 and will be available at select stores across the US, the UK, Canada, Ireland, Italy, and Australia. Also, the glasses will be available in 20 combinations.

The photos and videos captured by these smart glasses can be shared on Facebook using the companion application.

Facebook also said photos and videos taken by these glasses will not be used for personalized ads, and the glasses would be add-free.

How the glasses work

The photos or videos can be taken through virtual commands. Users can capture photos or videos by pressing the button at the temple of the glasses.

The LED light on the glasses will be on when users are clicking photos or taking videos so that people around will realize that the camera is on. The glasses are not waterproof and cannot be used in the rain.

The companies have published privacy guidelines and manuals for their use. These glasses cannot be used in private places like public toilets.

Also, users cannot use them for illegal activities like harassment or recording sensitive information like PIN codes.

These glasses are a step closer to Facebook’s goal to offer augmented reality spectacles. The social media giant is also developing wristband technology for augmented reality smart glasses. The company has been investing heavily in developing augmented virtual reality technology.

It is also developing an Oculus VR headset to support its augmented reality. Last year, the company had announced that it was 10 years away from launching augmented reality glasses which will impose virtual objects on the user’s view of the real world.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has recently announced that the company is building a metaverse, an augmented virtual reality technology.

Facebook’s competitors like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Apple are also working on smart glass technology. Earlier, Google and Microsoft also had soft-launched smart glasses, but their costly experiments failed.

Snap had launched AR glasses this year, but they are not for sale. It will take a decade for the public to adopt these technologies, according to experts.

Bottomline

Social media giant Facebook has invested heavily in virtual reality technologies in recent years as it sets its eyes on transforming itself into a metaverse company. Experts believe the rapid technological progress will change the world in the coming years when machines would accomplish a wide range of human tasks.
