The rate at which a company or an organisation is consuming its venture capital to finance its operations before it starts making money is known as burn rate.  The burn rate is usually measured in terms of monthly spending. For example, if a company says that it has a burn rate of $5 million, it means that the company’s per month spending is $5 million.
