How has the federal government been using the fund?
- Back in 2019, when the government had established the emergency response fund, most of it was targeted towards recovery and mitigation instead of prevention.
- Adding on, in the 2021 budget, the Federal government announced a ‘Prepare Australia fund’, committing AU$600 million for a span of six years towards disaster resilience.
- However, the Labor party accuses that the Morrison government has not completed any disaster prevention project yet. Rather, it has been focusing on generating investment returns for the government.
Bottom line
With the ongoing impact of effect of La Niña adverse weather events are still a threat to Australia. Thus, the Labour party’s pitch to be prepared and prevent disasters and damage looks like a valid pitch to many.
