There seems to be no let-up in pandemic woes for Australia with the state of New South Wales reporting 478 new locally acquired COVID-19 infections on Monday – a record daily high.
There were 157,000 tests taken during the reporting period, the state’s Premier Gladys Berejiklian informed reporters.
Of the 478 cases reported on Monday, 61 were in the community for their full infectious period and another 30 were in the community for part of their infectious period.
As she tried to calm down the residents of the province, she also warned that by September the daily fresh cases in the state may touch 1,000 a day and that the COVID-19-related restrictions may continue indefinitely.
While she stressed on vaccination, she also flagged that people should not lower their guard after vaccination.
“It takes two to three weeks for that dose to get effective. So, don’t assume that you are protected as soon as you get the jab,” Ms Berejiklian said.
The state also reported seven new deaths from the virus.
The latest tally pegs the total new cases in Australia at 512 infections, and deaths at nine.
Melbourne lockdown extended
Meanwhile, the lockdown has been extended in the Victorian city of Melbourne as well; night curfew has also been re-instated.
Initially, the lockdown was supposed to end on Thursday night but will now go on till 2 September 2021, Victorian Premier Daniel Andews said.
The state reported 22 locally transmitted cases, down from 25 reported a day prior.
Despite the lockdowns chipping away at the employment within the country, the property market is on fire with houses selling like hot cakes.
