Aussie auto sales surpass the million mark

Australian automobile sales for new cars and trucks has crossed the one million mark in 2021. Despite various concerns including COVID-19, shipping delays, shortage of microprocessors and the ongoing supply chain issues, sales have grown.

What pushed Auto sales in Australia?

  • The sales of new cars and trucks was driven by a demand surge of over 14% in the last year.
  • According to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) about 1.04 million vehicles were sold in 2021.
  • The sales number has shown an improvement of a 14.5% over the previous year (2020).
  • Although the global shortage of microprocessors, and the pandemic, did have an impact on car sales throughout Australia, it could not hamper sales growth.

Which cars topped the Aussie auto market?

  • The top seller was Toyota with 223,642 sales in 2021.
  • It was followed by Mazda selling on 101,119 and Hyundai reaching 72,872 cars.
  • Over the last 19 years, Japanese brand, Toyota has been leading the show in Australia.
  • Toyota’s top selling vehicles were from its HiLux range. The sales of these cars left behind the Ford Ranger, Toyota Rav4, Toyota Corolla and Toyota Landcruiser.

Road ahead for Aussie auto sector -

Despite pandemic and reduced access to showrooms in 2021, Australian consumers did buy new vehicles in solid numbers. However, sales did have a slight impact of global supply chain issues. Thus, the Australian automotive manufacturers are now working to strengthen their supply chains for 2022.
