‘The Boris Johnson government has asked everyone in England to stay indoors on New Year’s Eve in a bid to avoid spreading the virus. On Wednesday, UK health secretary Matt Hancock announced that another 20 million people would join 24 million Brits and will stay at home on New Year’s Eve. A publicity campaign warning was launched by the government after the National Health Service warned about the recent rise in cases.

Hancock elaborated that the fresh restrictions of moving three-fourth of England into lockdown were imposed after the new variant of Covid-19 led to a record rise in infections across the nation. In the last few days, the UK reported another 50,023 positive coronavirus cases and 981 Covid-related deaths, breaking the one-day record since the month of April.

This year, London will also not hold the fireworks show at London Eye, which is one of the biggest shows worldwide.

Areas including the whole of the north-east of England, Greater Manchester, large parts of the Midlands and the south-west have moved into strictest tier 4 rules from Thursday morning. Besides, the government has also upgraded the tier 3 areas to tier 4. Only around 2,000 people on the Isles of Scilly will remain in Tier 1.

The UK will witness a subdued celebration after the police officers and government issued warnings to refrain from gathering at parties.

Martin Hewitt, chairman of the National Police Chiefs’ Council, said that the restrictions on social gatherings would be effective across all tiers. People should not take part in large gatherings and parties.

He added that the rules were meant to prevent the transmission of coronavirus disease and protect people. Everyone should understand that it is vital to impose the restrictions in their area for the occasion of the new year and beyond that.

However, he said that those who will blatantly ignore the regulations would receive stern penalty notices.
