Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) can create a frenzy in no time. Even though prices of these assets -- similar to that of their blockchain-based cousins, cryptos -- can be very volatile, NFTs are popular.
Adding to this craze is the latest launch of the NFT marketplace of GameStop. A few of the NFTs listed on GameStop have also created a buzz in the otherwise dull cryptoverse. One of these NFT collections is that of MetaBoy. Let us explore the MetaBoy NFT and why it is trending.
What is MetaBoy NFT?
Not much information is available right now about the NFT collection. Reports claim that there are about 10,000 NFTs linked to MetaBoy, which are exclusively on the GameStop NFT platform. The assets are available to purchase using Ethereum’s ETH token.
It is also being said that all the originally listed assets of MetaBoy on GameStop have been purchased since launch, and any ongoing sale is a relisting by new buyers. The relisting of a MetaBoy NFT with a very high price in ETH, even equivalent to billions of dollars, is also being reported.
Why is the MetaBoy NFT listed at a high price?
It is quite possible that the MetaBoy collection just rode the GameStop NFT momentum to achieve this success. It is one of the first collections on GameStop, which is otherwise a very popular video game retailer. GameStop also drew attention when its shares rose to new heights during the pandemic, something that gave rise to the ‘meme token’ phenomenon.
The GameStop NFT marketplace launch was also one of the biggest events lately in the cryptoverse. Before this, GameStop had launched a crypto wallet service and there are talks of some more products and services based on Ethereum’s blockchain.
Most expensive NFT of all time
Even though the MetaBoy collection is listed at a high price, any asset is yet to be bought at that price by some NFT lover. However, some NFTs have been sold in the past for millions of dollars each. The names include CryptoPunk and BAYC, and digital artworks created by Beeple, and Pak.
Beeple’s Everyday is said to be the most expensive NFT artwork. It was sold for over US$69 million at a Christie’s auction.

Bottom line
The MetaBoy NFT could be gaining traction because of its listing on the GameStop NFT platform. Separately, the digital work that these NFTs represent might also have piqued the interest of NFT lovers. How the relisting of MetaBoy NFTs at expensive prices is a wait-and-watch game.
