For the past few years, cryptocurrencies have seen exponential growth. Such has been its impact that many first-time investors are getting into, preferring it over the conventional investment vehicles. Especially during pandemic, which saw the worldwide adoption jump by well over 880% according to the 2021 Chainalysis Global Crypto Adoption Index.

The global crypto adoption started rising slowly on Q2 of 2020 with the summed-up country index scores being at 2.5. By Q2 of 2021, this number had exploded to 24, indicating that the worldwide crypto adoption had grown over 2300% since Q3 of 2019, according to Chainalysis.

However, increased adoption has also brought issues related to crypto frauds, scams, gambling, rug pulls, etc., which has had unassuming crypto investors falling prey to it. One of the primary reasons for it is that investors often lack proper education when it comes to cryptocurrency investing when compared to the traditional form of investing. Neither many are aware of how a blockchain-based network work. Often, they are lured by the impressive growth of crypto and invest their savings only to realise that it was a form of a scam, which wiped away their entire savings.

Netflix Explained: Cryptocurrency

It doesn’t bore you with the complicated mumbo jumbo topics, but in a simple language, intends to lay out the benefits and risks of getting into the world of cryptos. This short film is a part of a series that covers a wide array of topics in short form.

Bitcoin Big Bang

Mt. Gox was one of the biggest cryptocurrency exchanges, which operated in Japan. From 2010 to 2014, it had several investors investing in it when Bitcoin’s price was just around US$450. However, Mt. Gox was liquidated in 2015 following a series of hacks and had to shut shop, eventually witnessing massive losses and investors losing their money. Bitcoin Big Bang is the documentary coverage of the fall of the biggest exchange of that time, which was responsible for 70% of all bitcoin transactions worldwide. Revealing his side of the story, CEO Mark Karpeles delves into what happened during the Mt. Gox episode.

I am Satoshi

The million-dollar question is still out there: Who is the ‘real Satoshi’ behind Bitcoin. There are several claimants to the title, but the real identity of Satoshi is still unknown. As the world continues to linger on and ask the question, this 53-minute movie tries to give its version of Satoshi and his/her knowledge on bitcoin.

While there are many more of these movies, the fact that such films are there on the public platform indicates the need to understand the concept more profoundly. Though every movie would have its version of cryptos, each film tends to give a different perspective about the world of cryptos, which would only enhance our knowledge on the vast and diverse subject.

As the adoption rate increases, there is a greater need for such films to be made and crypto explainer series to ensure that investors do get the know-how of the risk or benefits of cryptos before making investment decisions.
