Medibank (ASX:MPL) adds AU$207M to COVID-19 support fund

On 22 December 2022, Australian integrated healthcare company Medibank Private Limited (ASX:MPL) announced via an ASX filing that the company has planned to return an additional AU$207 million to its customers. Medibank will utilise COVID-19 permanent net claims savings for this additional return as a part of its COVID-19 support package.

With this addition, the total amount of Medibank’s COVID support package will reach a record AU$950 million. The company claims that this is the largest financial return to date from any major Australian health insurance fund.

Shares of Medibank were trading in the red territory, 0.503% down on the ASX as of 11:35 AM AEDT, 23 December. The value of each Medibank share was AU$2.965 at the same time.

According to the official ASX report, these AU$207 million funds will be paid to the customers using a cashback scheme.

Medibank stated that, for extras-only policies, it could cost up to AU$151, and for hospital and extras coverage, it can cost up to AU$667. For extras-only coverage, this will typically cost AU$30, and for hospital and extras policies, it will cost around AU$129. Customers will automatically receive their cash in their bank accounts by the end of May 2023.

The cash give-back and premium rise deferment programme is available to resident Medibank and ahm customers with active hospital and/or extras insurance anytime between 1 July 2022 and 31 December 2022. The company ensured that this cash rebate will not have an impact on Medibank's operational profits for the six months ending 31 December 2022, as it is being paid for by COVID-19 permanent net claims savings.

With today’s decline, the share price of Medibank has decreased by 0.17% in the last five trading sessions while increasing 4.40% in the last 30 days. On the contrary, Medibank’s shares witnessed a drop of 8.77% in the previous six months, 13.56% on year-to-date (YTD), and 12.92% over the course of a year.
