What caused NZ to lose top COVID-Resilient Nation's Position to Singapore

According to the latest Bloomberg’s COVID Resilience Ranking, Singapore has topped the chart and has emerged as the most resilient country during the ongoing pandemic, which has engulfed almost the entire world.

New Zealand has now slipped by 0.1 points with slower and relaxed vaccination rates across the country, in spite of witnessing no community outbreaks in the recent times.

Assessment Of Various Countries

As per the survey, Singapore scored 79.7 as compared to New Zealand's 79.6 points. The rankings were based after due consideration and study of cases in various countries. The data was pulled on, fatality rates, positive test rates, as well as the inoculation data across the countries to arrive at the final score.

It is noted that Australia secured the 2nd spot, while Israel and Taiwan are 3rd and 4th, respectively. The US and the UK stood 17th 18th, respectively, while India ranked 30th. On the contrary, Argentina, Poland and Brazil were considered the worst countries in the resilience ranking.

Singaporeans Remained Resilient With Societal Trust Helping To Cope With The Virus

As per a recent online survey, which saw the participation of 500 Singaporeans, it has been observed that ever since the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020, Singaporeans have learnt to withstand the effects of novel coronavirus while remaining resilient and vigilant in their day-to-day activities.

Social trust and bonding have helped the Singapore residents to cope with the pandemic and adapt themselves to the new normal. Moreover, communal bonding has played an instrumental role in enhancing their psychological well-being during these uncertain times.

Moreover, with an array of government aids and policies, the fear and concerns among residents have eased out to a great extent.

Singapore Vaccination Scorecard

It is reported that the sovereign island city-state has given COVID-19 jabs to over one-fifth of its 5.8 million population. This is something which other nations like NZ, AU, etc., are yet to achieve.

It is noted that the vaccination roll-out programme in Singapore is making good progress, with about 2,213,888 doses of COVID-19 vaccines administered to date. It means that around 19.4% of the population of the country has been inoculated with an assumption that every person needs to be given 2 jabs of the COVID-19 vaccine.

With the current rate of giving about 45,618 doses of the vaccine daily, it is estimated that it would take just 26 more days to cover another group of 10% of the Singaporean population.

On the other hand, New Zealand, with a population of about 5.13 million, 140,580 Kiwis have been administered with the first dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, while the 2nd dose has been given to about 42,771 Kiwis, i.e. a total of 183,351 vaccine shots have been given so far.

Nonetheless, the efforts put up by the NZ government in curtailing COVID-19 are commendable. With its foresightedness and effective governance, Jacinda Ardern’s government has drawn praises from all its counterparts across the globe.
