Major concern of the officials

Dave Rogers, the senior ranger from the Department of Conservation in Taranaki said that Taranaki is a splendid location, and the authorities are looking forward to seeing visitors flocking over the place.

However, he warns the visitors to be adequately prepared before venturing into the park. Without the right gear and realistic expectations about what can be achieved in a single visit, the trip would not fare well.

With over 40 years of dedicated work experience in Taranaki Mounga and Egmont National Park, Rogers further added that visitors need to select the right trail, whether for tramp or walking according to their fitness and gaining experience.

He said that several of the search operations that needs to be conducted at the Mounga have been a result of people either being ill-informed or not equipped adequately. He was of the view that a search operation puts more people at risk, while looking at the bigger picture.

How to go about your trip?

There is need for a complete check to be done before hand about what one might need and what circumstances one might come face to face with before starting an expedition.

Taking information from the official DOC website or from the visitor centres set up especially for this purpose, could be beneficial for someone preparing for the trip. People should also be ready to turn back when they think things are not going a certain way before they fall into a deeply dangerous situation.

Hiking tips: some basic but essential guidelines to follow

  • Selecting the right track, first and foremost, ensuring whether one has the skill set and equipment for the same.
  • Packing appropriate warm clothes for bad weather conditions, stocking up on food and well-preparedness for an unforeseen night out is essential.
  • It is extremely important to share trip plans, routes, etc with someone one trusts, as it could make the life-altering difference, if things go south.
  • Being able to read the weather conditions swiftly and making necessary changes to one’s plan is very important.
  • Sticking together on tracks, as well as in decision-making is important in the woods. Taking care of each other, staying plenty hydrated and adequately fed is important to conserve strength for the trip.

Besides, people looking to stay the night at the Egmont National Park need to ensure the availability for accommodation beforehand.
