Sony launches PlayStation 5 amid COVID-19 gaming boom

Summary

  • Sony Corp’s PlayStation 5 console, one of the most important gadgets launched in core markets on 12 November is competing with Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox amid coronavirus gaming boom.
  • Players would be able to access their PS5 from a PC or mobile device through Remote Play, which will be getting an upgrade, in the same way as PS4.
  • PS5 is available in Japan, Australia, Mexico, New Zealand, South Korea, and North America, but gamers will have to wait until 19 November.

On 12 November, Sony Corp (TYP:6758) PlayStation 5 console went on sale following the launch of newest Xbox by the rival Microsoft competing for the holiday season ahead. Market leader Sony depends on big-ticket exclusive games such as Spider-Man: Miles Morales to hold the advantage over its US rival, with pre-orders steering towards a record debut.

With surging coronavirus cases across various countries, promotional and launch events are off the plan and crowds of excited clients are out of the question. COVID-19 has caused a spike in demand for gaming as most of the people are inside their respective houses, looking for ways to pass their time.

The next-generation console is selling for US$500 and US$400 without a disk reader.

Players can access PS5 via Remote Play

Remote Play is being upgraded on PlayStation 4, enabling console owners to access their PS4 from a PC or handheld device to download games via a wireless network. Sony revealed on Monday, in its Ultimate FAQ on the next-gen console that Remote Play on PS4 would also allow users to connect to and stream games from the PlayStation 5.

Remote Play would allow gamers to access local multiplayer games through Remote Play by adding support for up to 3 extra users to enter the Remote Play session.

The new PlayStation App for mobile devices for iOS 12.2 or higher and Android 6.0 or higher version provides an inherent PlayStation Store experience that allows quick and effortless shopping and searching, with the option to buy and download games and add-ons directly to the device.

As per Jim Ryan, President & CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment stated that players would get the taste of some innovative features like DualSense wireless controller’s haptic feedback or immersive 3D Audio as they get their hands on Playstation 5 consoles today for the first time.

Outlook ahead

The length up to which the boom will last remains unknown, with reports this week of advancement on a virus vaccination triggering a gaming industry sell-off on financial markets.

The stakes are considerably higher for Sony for its new console than for Microsoft since gaming produces a significant share of the revenues of the Japanese business and around a third of its sales.

Sony Playstation 5 will support older games and cross-generation multiplayer with PS4 users.

PS5 is available from 12 November in Mexico, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, North America, and Australia, but gamers will have to wait till 19 November in other regions.
