Australia Post is again preparing for halting the business lodgements, pickups and collections for five days for e-commerce retailers in Melbourne as the company is facing a major backlog due to a reduced workforce. This is the second pause in weeks, and similar moves can be traced back to September.

The news came overnight, and services will be paused from 1st October (12:01 am) to 6 October (12:01 am). The services of e-commerce retailers in Victoria and other territories and states will not be affected. The pause will only be implemented in eParcel services and standard parcel post services in the metropolitan areas of Greater Melbourne. Letter services, Startrack Express, Startrack Courier, Startrack Premium and Express Post services will remain unaffected in the regions of Melbourne. Also, the post offices will be operating for customers and businesses collecting lodging and carded parcels.

Australian Post stated the reason for the pause,

The company apologised for the inconvenience caused to the customers and added that parcels processing and delivery will also be done on weekends in order to manage the pressure.

Bottom Line

Due to COVID-19 and lockdowns, e-commerce spending has increased and created pressure on delivery services. Therefore, the pause is important to clear the top of the funnel and communicating the same to the customers and businesses strengthens the relationship with them. The customers understand the perspective of the business as long as the information is communicated with them fairly.
