The Australian insurance industry offers various property and vehicle, travel, and directors and officers insurance coverage to companies. It acts as a cushion for the economy and lessens the financial impacts of events by financing claims out of the private sector.

Insurance Council of Australia (ICA), the representative body of the general insurance industry in Australia, reported a total of 91,000 insurance claims so far. The amount claimed so far was AU$1.26 billion. Most claims were related to property.

Australian general insurance market situations continue to alter, and discussions with insurers are ever more complicated. Because of the rise in prices, coverage cuts and risk exclusions, reducing limits and adjustments in the terms & conditions can impact insurance policies. Hence, people must be aware of any upcoming changes in the fast-changing insurance sector.

In this article, we will look at the recent two developments from this sector.

Measures to improve the affordability and availability of commercial insurance products

On 20 September 2021, the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) announced measures to improve the affordability and availability of commercial insurance products for the small and medium (SME) sized business sector, comprising the Business Advisory Council's creation to work together solutions related to these matters.

Business Advisory Council would bring together business and insurance sectors to work together via practical solutions to insurance availability and affordability, particularly for professional indemnity, public liability and business interruption cover. Also, these would be considered at the sector level and not individual enterprises.

The Advisory Council will provide reports and recommendations to the Board of Insurance Council of Australia, including the CEOs of the largest insurers in the country.

Further, the Advisory Board would participate in the ICA-led exams of the feasibility of business interruptions covering protection against upcoming pandemics.

Australians Impacted by Natural Disaster

In a recent report, ICA updated that Aussies affected by natural disasters in spring & summer season might experience interruptions to repair & rebuilds unless natural repairs and rebuilds facilitate essential recovery staff to cross state borders.

In Australia, because of natural disaster, there is an increase in the number of claims beyond the capacity of local workforces. These are also creating challenges for insurers and their customers because of the restricted entry to interstate trades due to pandemic limitations & closure of borders.

Hence, ICA is requesting a national methodology for the movement of key recovery workers across state borders as one of the 6 policy alterations to reduce any natural disaster in the future.

To safeguard Aussies from any upcoming natural disasters, ICA requests State and Federal governments to act in six policy areas. These are:

  • Investing more in resilience, especially at the state level.
  • Improve building quality & standards to offer improved safety from severe weather events.
  • Improved land use planning so that no more homes are constructed in harms’ approach.
  • Eliminating state taxes on insurance to enhance the level & amount of cover.
  • A national method to the movement of key recovery workers across state borders.
  • Co-ordinated catastrophe clean-up following an event to let rebuilding & recovery to start quickly.
