In a year which was marred by the worst global pandemic in over a hundred years, you’d be forgiven for thinking the public’s attention would be on anything else. And yet according to some sources, ‘cryptocurrency’ has leapfrogged ‘Covid-19’ or even ‘Covid-19 vaccine’ as the most searched topic in the internet.

Popular online forum Reddit has crowned cryptocurrency the most popular topic on Reddit in 2021, with people mentioning “crypto” 6.6 million times.

Reddit hosts more than 430 million monthly active users in over 100,000 communities dedicated to everything from politics to television shows.

Within those more than 100,000 communities, are subreddits (pages) dedicated to different cryptocurrencies.

In fact, there are over 500 cryptocurrency subreddits, and the four most popular ones this year were r/dogecoin, r/superstonk, r/cryptocurrency and r/bitcoin.

What Does This Mean?

The only thing that we can really be sure of is that people’s interest in crypto is at an all-time high.

Reddit has been home to crypto communities for ten years. In their annual report, Reddit outlined that their platform continues to be the hub for crypto enthusiasts.

Earlier this week, Google released their report on the words most commonly put into their search engine. The report revealed that ‘Dogecoin’ and ‘Ethereum price’ landed in the top ten most-Googled news stories in the past year.

However, it’s important to remember that while there has been an increased curiosity regarding cryptocurrency and particular cryptos mentioned in both Google and Reddit’s annual report, this doesn’t necessarily translate into money invested in them. It simply means an increasing number of people are more aware of the digital currency space.

Reddit’s top four cryptos

r/dogecoin – the original dog-themed memecoin gained traction this year, thanks to the public backing of a number of celebrities. The most vocal of these celebs had been Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, who earlier this month, announced the electric car manufacturer would start accepting the dog-themed crypto as payment for their products.

Dogecoin has a strong community which is represented on Reddit. The most popular Dogecoin post was: “Who’s still holding $DOGE?” with 80.3K upvotes.

r/superstonk – r/superstonk describes itself as a place for theoretical discussions about business and stocks.

This subreddit’s subscriber growth increased the most among Reddit’s crypto communities, with a mammoth 917,000 percent increase in the past year.

r/cryptocurrency – with over four million members, this subreddit is a place for crypto enthusiasts to come together to discuss all things crypto, including analysis, predictions and news.

r/bitcoin – a hugely popular subreddit with nearly 3.7 million subscribers, r/bitcoin offers a place for discussion as well as a bunch of resources to help anyone looking to learn more about Bitcoin or the Bitcoin market.
