{The Open Network} (TON) faced another network outage, which appears to have been triggered by a surge in users minting DOGS tokens. According to social media updates from TON, the issue began around 19:19 UTC. The TON block explorer indicates that the last transaction on the network was from an address ending in 'J37', with the most recent work chain block recorded at 45,350,522.
The previous day's outage on August 27 which was also linked to the DOGS memecoin, resulted in several hours of network downtime. During this period, no new blocks were produced, with block production ceasing at work chain block 45,341,899. This interruption led to some centralized exchanges imposing restrictions on TON deposit and withdrawal transactions.
The network's functionality was partially restored in the early hours of August 28, following instructions for validators to restart block production around 4:00 UTC. The TON team has assured users that all funds are secure and is actively working to resolve the issues affecting network stability.
Helius developer Mert criticized the handling of the outages, describing the response as inadequate due to insufficient official communication between TON channels and the community, which has been unable to access funds during these disruptions.
The timing of these outages was particularly challenging for TON. The recent arrest of Telegram founder Pavel Durov by French authorities had already contributed to a decline in the price of Toncoin, which fell to lows on August 26. The price temporarily rebounded to approximately $6.11 on August 28, following inaccurate reports suggesting Durov’s release. However, with further clarification on Durov’s indictment, the price of Toncoin dropped below its 200-day exponential moving average, reflecting ongoing market uncertainty and volatility.
