In 2024, The Open Network (TON), the blockchain platform linked to Telegram, experienced significant growth, driven largely by the adoption of Telegram Mini Apps. According to DefiLlama, the total value locked (TVL) in TON projects surged over 2,000% from January, reaching $307.6 million.

Telegram Mini Apps (TMAs) are web applications that run within the Telegram messenger, which was founded by Pavel and Nikolai Durov in 2013. Launched in 2023, the Mini Apps platform allows developers to create applications using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript directly within Telegram. This integration has been facilitated by the TON blockchain, offering advantages such as speed, scalability, and low transaction fees.

The rapid adoption of TMAs in 2024 was further accelerated by the integration of the {Toncoin} (TON) blockchain into these apps starting in January. This combination of Telegram's extensive user base and the efficient TON blockchain has contributed to the platform's expansion. Additionally, new in-app payment tools, including Telegram Stars, are enhancing the appeal of TMAs by providing a seamless bridge between Web2 and Web3 technologies.

Another key factor in the growth of TMAs is the TON Foundation's community incentive program, The Open League. Launched in March 2024, this program aims to distribute 30 million Toncoin, valued at $167 million, to support the ecosystem's development.

However, the TON ecosystem has faced challenges. After peaking at $776.6 million in TVL on July 19, the TON platform experienced a 60% decline in value. This drop is attributed to broader cryptocurrency market fluctuations and the recent detention of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov in France on August 24. This event caused a 5% drop in TVL and nearly a 20% decrease in the value of TON's native cryptocurrency.

Despite these setbacks, the TON Foundation asserts that it remains operational and compliant with European Union regulations, including the Digital Services Act. Issues reported with the Wallet on Telegram, a third-party app, are believed to be related to the recent launch of the DOGS memecoin rather than Durov's detention.

The TON ecosystem, supported by Telegram's continued innovation and robust community initiatives, is poised to navigate these challenges and continue its growth trajectory.
