Japanese Tennis star Naomi Osaka is the latest to be bitten by the cryptocurrency bug. The Japanese tennis professional was intrigued by the cryptocurrency after she read about Dogecoin (DOGE) in news. Crypto’s twitter community further enthused her interest in the digital token promoting her to speak to her agents to a possible investment opportunity in the cryptocurrency.

Just ahead of the U.S. Open, she had joined the nonfungible token (NFT) space by launching her collection of rare tokens. Osaka’s collection includes digitally signed access passes which would give the holders an exclusive collection of Osaka’s collectibles. Earlier in April, Osaka launched a six-piece NFT collection with her sister, Mari Osaka, which was sold for nearly US $600,000. This happens to be most expensive item sold by a professional tennis player.

Cryptocurrencies has struck the right chord with the sports industry and players alike. Today, many professional athletes and sports clubs have found cryptocurrencies as an alternative mode to engage fans as well as earn revenue in the process. Sports Crypto NFTs (non-fungible tokens) especially has had some of the biggest names pulling towards it.

Recently, one of the biggest names Lionel Messi entered into the NFT craze. The former Barcelona star had inked a two-year contract with the French giants Paris Saint-Germain for an annual salary of US $41 million plus bonuses, which also included a ‘welcome package’ that included $PSG Fan Tokens.

Major brands such as Budweiser and Visa too have showcased interest in NFTs by acquiring them. Top entrepreneurs such as Mark Cuban too has openly stated his interest in building a scalable AI infrastructure for NFTs and have invested in them.

Among other sports professionals who actively promoted NFTs are, Russell Okung, Trevor Lawrence, Floyd Mayweather, Mike Tyson, James Rodrigues.

Conclusion

Today, different sports professionals from multi sports are venturing into cryptocurrencies. The NFT boom have definitely caught their eye and they feel they can connect with their fans through this better. With more big names joining the list, we could see more big names joining the list of sports professionals who are exploring the cryptocurrency market and seeking investment in them.
