Bitcoin mining can contribute to reducing methane emissions. The paper, titled "An Integrated Landfill Gas-to-Energy and Bitcoin Mining Framework," highlights the Bitcoin mining operations to leverage Landfill Gas to Energy(LFGTE) systems. These systems capture methane gas from landfills and convert it into usable energy, thereby mitigating the greenhouse gas's impact on the atmosphere.

Methane is reported to be 80 times more harmful than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period following its release, according to a United Nations report. The research underscores that {Bitcoin} (BTC) mining's incentive structure makes it particularly well-suited for such long-term and capital-intensive projects. Unlike other industries, Bitcoin mining provides a sustainable revenue generation model that supports the cost recovery necessary for implementing LFGTE systems and similar initiatives.

The study also suggests that Bitcoin mining could be applied to other sources of underutilized energy, including orphaned oil and gas wells, wastewater treatment plants, and agricultural processing operations. By repurposing these energy sources, Bitcoin mining could contribute to broader environmental benefits beyond just methane reduction.

Marathon Digital Holdings, known as MARA, is an example of a company pursuing this approach. In 2023, Marathon Digital partnered with Nodal Power to use methane gas for Bitcoin mining operations in Utah. Furthermore, in May 2024, Marathon Digital expanded its efforts by entering into an agreement with the Kenyan government to develop renewable energy infrastructure within the country.

Previous research has supported these findings. A 2023 study by the Institute of Risk Management indicated that Bitcoin mining could reduce global emissions by approximately 8% by 2030 through the effective use of underutilized energy sources.

Overall, the integration of Bitcoin mining with environmental initiatives such as methane gas capture could represent a significant advancement in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting sustainable energy practices.
