Chris Pavlovski, the founder and CEO of Rumble, has announced his departure from Europe following the recent arrest of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov by French authorities. Pavlovski’s comments come amid ongoing tensions between Rumble and French authorities. In November 2022, Rumble restricted access for French users, citing demands from the French government to remove “certain Russian news sources.” Rumble challenged these demands legally. Additionally, Pavlovski alleged that Russia had blocked Rumble in May for not adhering to its censorship requirements.
The arrest of Pavel Durov, a Russian-born French citizen, occurred on August 24 at Paris–Le Bourget Airport. The arrest was carried out under a warrant issued by French judicial police following a preliminary investigation. Reports indicate that the investigation centers on Telegram’s alleged failure to cooperate with law enforcement and its moderation practices regarding {Crypto} content related to child exploitation, drug trafficking, fraud, and terrorism.
Telegram has responded by asserting that it complies with European Union regulations and maintains moderation practices in line with industry standards. The company emphasized that Durov frequently travels within Europe and has nothing to hide. Telegram also highlighted that its platform, with nearly a billion users, serves as a crucial source of information and disputed the claim that the platform or its owner should be held responsible for misuse.
French authorities have yet to release a detailed public statement regarding Durov’s arrest, but an official announcement. Meanwhile, Rumble’s management and legal team continue to address the situation, with Pavlovski expressing hope for Durov’s prompt release.
