Mysten Labs, the developer behind the Sui blockchain, has announced the launch of preorders for its new handheld gaming device, the SuiPlay0X1. Priced at $599, the device is expected to start shipping in the first half of 2025.
The SuiPlay0X1 is designed to run both PC games and titles built on the Sui blockchain. Mysten Labs aims to demonstrate that blockchain technology can be seamlessly integrated into gaming without compromising the experience of traditional games. "At the end of the day, gamers don’t care what tech is powering a game," said Adeniyi Abiodun, co-founder of Mysten Labs. "The SuiPlay0X1 will show that blockchain can enhance gaming by providing deeper player ownership while maintaining the enjoyment of traditional games."
The device will weigh 677 grams and include an integrated graphics processing unit (GPU). It will run on Playtron GameOS, a Linux-based operating system capable of supporting many AAA PC games without needing modifications. Mysten Labs, founded in 2021 by former Meta crypto executives, first revealed plans for the SuiPlay0X1 at a Paris Sui Basecamp event in April. The SuiPlay0X1 will join a competitive market of handheld gaming devices, including Valve's Steam Deck, Asus's ROG Ally X, and Lenovo's Legion Go.
According to Omidia research, global sales of handheld gaming devices reached 19.3 million units in 2023 and are projected to grow to 29.3 million by 2028. For those interested in preordering, the SuiPlay0X1 can be purchased using Sui (SUI), Ether (ETH), or {Solana} (SOL). Within 12 hours of the preorder announcement, over 1,000 units were reportedly reserved.
