LINE Introduces Telegram-Style 'Mini DApps' with Kaia Mainnet Launch

The messaging app LINE is set to integrate “mini DApps” with the launch of Kaia’s mainnet, following a similar feature introduced by telegram last year. Kaia, a new layer-1 blockchain, officially launched its mainnet on August 29, offering notable advancements in processing speed and cost efficiency. According to a blog post from the Kaia DLT Foundation, the blockchain features processing speeds of approximately one second and minimal gas fees.

The launch of Kaia is accompanied by the introduction of Kaika Wave, a program designed to facilitate the creation of “mini DApps” — decentralized applications that will be integrated into the LINE messaging platform. This development follows the recent merger of Japan’s Finschia blockchain, previously associated with LINE, and South Korea’s Klayton blockchain, linked to Kakao. The merger has combined the resources of two major social messaging platforms with a combined user base of over 250 million across regions including South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, and Indonesia.

Details regarding the specific mini DApps that will debut on LINE have yet to be disclosed. This new feature mirrors Telegram’s Mini Apps, which were launched the previous year and allow users to access a variety of applications directly within the messaging app. Telegram’s Mini Apps include functionalities ranging from to-do lists and language learning to job searching and dating apps, alongside cryptocurrency related services and play-to-earn games.

Telegram’s blockchain, {The Open Network} (TON), has recently experienced significant outages. Over a span of 36 hours, the network suffered two major disruptions, the first lasting over seven hours from August 27 to 28 and the second extending for six hours into August 29. TON developers attributed these interruptions to a surge in network activity caused by the release of a dog-themed memecoin, Dogs (DOGS), which led to excessive strain on the network.

The introduction of Kaia’s mini DApps on LINE represents a strategic move to enhance the functionality and appeal of messaging apps through blockchain technology, positioning Kaia as a competitor in the expanding market of integrated app ecosystems.
