A coalition of cryptocurrency industry figures is mobilizing support for U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris in an effort to influence her stance on digital assets should she win the presidency in November. The group, which includes the Blockchain Foundation, plans to host a fundraiser on September 13 in Washington, D.C. The event, featuring tickets priced between $500 and $5,000, aims to raise $100,000 for Harris.
This initiative highlights the {crypto} sector's preference for Harris over her rival, Donald Trump, despite her relatively low profile on cryptocurrency issues compared to Trump. According to recent data from FiveThirtyEight, Harris maintains a 3.2% lead over Trump in national polling, a lead that has persisted since President Joe Biden's endorsement of Harris following his decision to withdraw from the presidential race.
Cleve Mesidor, executive director of the Blockchain Foundation, emphasized that the fundraiser seeks to make a significant statement about the role of cryptocurrency within the Democratic Party and to encourage discussions on how a potential Harris administration could support the sector. The event is also intended to promote greater access to capital for communities of color.
The crypto industry has faced regulatory challenges under the Biden administration, with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) taking enforcement actions against major industry players for alleged securities law violations. Notable firms such as Coinbase and Ripple have contributed substantial sums to political action committees like Fairshake, which has campaigned against certain Democratic policies.
Harris’ campaign has already engaged with the crypto industry, including a meeting with industry representatives in August and a previous roundtable discussion in July. Brian Nelson, a senior adviser to the Harris campaign, has indicated that Harris would support policies designed to foster the growth of emerging technologies, including cryptocurrency.
This fundraiser follows similar efforts by the Crypto 4 Harris group, which has also supported Harris' campaign and hosted a virtual town hall with Democratic lawmakers.
