Summary

  • Amount to huge savings and environmental benefits, electric cars are the future
  • Government manoeuvring people towards zero emissions through incentives

With the goal of becoming sustainable in terms of zero carbon emissions by the year 2025 there are several new incentives being given to people. In the latest endeavour in the same direction, the government announced exemption of the Road user charges for electric vehicle owners further till the 31 March 2024. While it may not sound like much, it amounts to about NZ$800 in savings each year, making it a feasible deal.

Creating change through incentives

Transport Minister Michael Wood is of the view that these little incentives are what will eventually help more and more people in making the shift towards sustainable cars. When charging your electric vehicle at home, the cost incurred in roughly equivalent to fuel costs at about 40c/litre. This is why the savings being offered are huge after the one-time investment into buying a sustainable vehicle. The Clean Car Discount, or the money that is saved when one runs a sustainable vehicle is something that has the potential of helping people get back as much as N$8625 back from when they first invest into a cleaner, greener vehicle.

In a further attempt to help people make the big switch, there is work done for the installation of electric car chargers being installed in every 75kms in highways linking most states in the country, making it as convenient for people as stopping at a gas station for a regular car. Mr Wood further said that this is the groundwork being laid for invoking confidence in people  for buying electric cars.

People making the green shift

In recent times, the number of electric cars being bought has grown by 5 times and this is representative of the fact that people also want to see change in the current situation and do their part in creating a greener tomorrow. The Low Emission Transport fund, which is set aside for efforts towards sustainable travel is going to get a boost by the year 2023 too so that more consistent efforts can be made towards creating a place where sustainable travel is the go-to option.
