- Western Mines resumes phase four drilling at Mulga Tank
- Focus on nickel-cobalt-copper-PGM exploration in WA
- Downhole surveys to refine future drill targets
Western Mines Group (ASX:WMG) has recommenced exploration at its Mulga Tank Nickel-Cobalt-Copper-Platinum Group Metals (PGM) Project in Western Australia, initiating a fourth phase drilling campaign aimed at strengthening and expanding its resource base.
The company, with a market capitalisation of approximately $13.55 million, has begun mobilising both reverse circulation (RC) and diamond drilling operations. This latest phase is strategically designed to enhance infill drilling, extend the existing mineral resource, and pursue high-impact exploration targets across the Mulga Tank Complex.
The planned drilling includes additional holes targeting the western margin of the complex, particularly near drillhole MTRC046, based on a refined geological understanding of the basal architecture. The new approach follows the mapping of high-tenor massive sulphide globules and aims to capitalise on previously encountered high-grade nickel sulphide zones.
In parallel, a downhole electromagnetic (DHEM) survey crew is expected to arrive on-site in the coming weeks. These surveys will be critical in pinpointing the placement of follow-up diamond holes by investigating several drillholes completed during the third drilling phase.
This phase four campaign is partly supported by funding secured through a prior capital raise and two grants from the Western Australian government under its Exploration Incentive Scheme.
Western Mines has made substantial progress at Mulga Tank, which hosts over 5.3 million tonnes of contained nickel based on the company’s maiden mineral resource estimate. The project encompasses the entire Mulga Tank Ultramafic Complex — a large-scale dunite intrusion geologically comparable to well-known deposits like Mt Keith and Perseverance.
Notably, the project aligns with the broader trend of strategic exploration for critical minerals in Western Australia, supporting the future of low-emission technologies. As Western Mines ramps up activity, this drilling phase holds potential to unlock deeper insights into the magmatic nickel sulphide system.
Though not classified as an ASX 200 index, Western Mines Group continues to position itself as a key explorer in Western Australia’s mineral sector, particularly in the pursuit of critical battery metals.
The company remains focused on its mission to advance discovery across its Western Australian tenements, with Mulga Tank at the forefront of its exploration strategy.
