- Sunshine Metals (SHN) begins VTEM survey at Ravenswood Consolidated Project
- $231,000 Queensland grant supports exploration efforts
- Targeting high-grade copper and gold systems near known deposits
Sunshine Metals (ASX:SHN) has taken a significant step forward in its exploration strategy by initiating an advanced airborne electromagnetic survey across its Ravenswood Consolidated Project in North Queensland. This move aims to pinpoint deeply buried volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) mineral systems, known for hosting rich copper and gold deposits.
The 840 line-kilometre Versatile Time-Domain Electromagnetics (VTEM) survey spans an expansive 72 km² area along the Coronation Highway region. Funded in part by a $231,000 grant through Queensland’s Collaborative Exploration Initiative, the survey reflects a collaborative effort between the explorer and the state to unlock the resource potential of the region.
Utilising the VTEM Max system by Geotech, Sunshine Metals is set to capture high-resolution magnetic, conductivity, and resistivity data. These readings are instrumental in identifying VMS targets that often contain significant copper and gold mineralisation. Of particular interest is the region’s close proximity to the Highway-Reward deposit, which boasts a known resource of 3.9 million tonnes grading 5.3% copper and 1.1 grams per tonne of gold.
The survey is being prioritised based on the presence of favourable stratigraphy and the strategic location near the Highway-Reward system. The broader area forms part of the Mt Windsor Sub-province, historically known to host high-grade deposits including Liontown, Highway-Reward, and Thalanga.
Sunshine Metals' leadership is optimistic about the exploration upside the survey could unlock. While the primary focus remains on advancing shallow gold prospects toward development, this geophysical initiative offers the opportunity to identify deeper copper-gold systems, which could add material value to its asset portfolio.
Notably, Sunshine Metals is also participating in the upcoming Noosa Mining Investor Conference, scheduled for July 23-25 at the Peppers Noosa Resort, where it is expected to share updates on exploration and development progress.
Though Sunshine Metals is not currently part of the ASX200 stocks, its active exploration and government-backed programs position it among emerging explorers to watch within Australia's resource sector.
As the demand for copper continues to rise due to its integral role in clean energy and electrification trends, initiatives like this one may play a crucial role in supplying future-facing commodities. Investors and sector observers alike will be keeping a close eye on the outcomes from this airborne survey in Queensland's mineral-rich terrain.
