Highlights

  • Element 25 (ASX:E25) awarded $268M US grant for its Louisiana battery material facility.
  • Facility to produce high-purity manganese for US EV supply chains.
  • Project backed by commitments from General Motors (NYSE:GM) and Stellantis (NYSE:STLA).

Element 25 (ASX:E25), an Australian manganese producer, has achieved a significant milestone by securing $268 million in funding under the US Department of Energy’s Battery Materials Processing Grant program. This grant bolsters efforts to enhance the domestic supply chain for critical battery materials, reflecting growing support for localized production in the US.

A New Era for Battery Material Supply in the US

The grant will aid in the construction of Element 25’s high-purity manganese sulfate monohydrate (HPMSM) processing facility in Louisiana. This innovative plant aims to produce up to 65,000 metric tonnes of HPMSM annually, meeting the demands of the US electric vehicle (EV) sector and reducing reliance on international supply chains. With operations commencing by April 2025, the facility will mark one of the first commercial-scale HPMSM production units in the country.

Element 25 has already garnered substantial backing, securing $185 million in funding commitments from General Motors (NYSE:GM) and Stellantis (NYSE:STLA). These partnerships include long-term supply and financing agreements, further ensuring the project’s viability.

Advancing the Domestic Supply Chain

The Louisiana facility is designed to process manganese ore sourced from Element 25’s Butcherbird mine in Western Australia. It is set to supply up to 135,000 tonnes of HPMSM annually to EV manufacturers, ensuring a reliable and sustainable pipeline of materials for the US market.

Managing Director Justin Brown lauded the US grant as a "vote of confidence" in the company and the project. "This funding represents a significant step forward for our Louisiana HPMSM plant. Together with commitments from General Motors and Stellantis, this brings us closer to construction and operational readiness," he said.

Strengthening the US EV Market

The funding supports broader goals under the Battery Materials Processing program, which seeks to build a robust processing industry within the US. With strong endorsements from the state of Louisiana, including an attractive incentives package, the project is positioned as a key driver in reducing dependency on Chinese sources of critical materials.

This development cements Element 25 as a pivotal player in the US battery material landscape, aligning with strategic initiatives to bolster clean energy technologies.
