Independent upstream oil & gas company Invictus Energy Limited (ASX:IVZ) has received approval from the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) for the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) renewal for Special Grant 4571 till July 2023.
Special Grant 4571 refers to the world-class Cabora Bassa Project in Zimbabwe operated by Invictus Energy’s 80%-owned subsidiary Geo Associates (Private) Limited.
A consequential validation for SG 4571
With the EIA Certificate, the Environmental Management Agency has permitted Geo Associates Pvt Ltd to conduct operations at SG 4571 as per the Part XI of the Environmental Management Act (Chapter 20:27). Geo Associates is an 80%-owned subsidiary of Invictus and a holder of SG 4571.
The EIA renewal shows that all the permitting requirements have been met. It serves as the go-ahead for Invictus to undertake various activities in the field, such as seismic acquisition and exploration drilling.
The initial EIA assessment undertaken in 2019 by independent environmental consultants, the Scientific & Industrial Research & Development Centre (SIRDC), is one of the largest assessments conducted in Zimbabwe.
The process includes field surveys, baseline measurements of ecology, hydrology, hydrogeological, environmental, archaeological, soil surveys and socioeconomic and community consultations of local leaders, concerned government ministries and government extension offices as well as main project stakeholders.
Local communities in and around the Muzarabani, Mbire and Mashonaland Central Provinces have shown full support for the mega project. Community information sessions saw healthy participation, with up to 1,000 participants in some meetings.
Management Commentary
Invictus’ Community Social Responsibility (CSR) Program
Invictus Energy had developed its CSR program to deliver benefits to local communities. It has been designed considering the EIA process as well as the feedback received by Community Liaison Officers (CLOs) from locals. Various consultations were held with local communities during the CB21 Seismic Survey program.
The provision of water to communities and clinics around the Muzarabani and Mbire districts has been the primary focus of the CSR program. This is because water has been the most sought-after request for the community. In addition, water is an essential element of many CSR initiatives, which Invictus aims to execute in the future.
