Why Trade Desk (TTD), ViacomCBS (VIAC) stocks plummeted today?

  • Trade Desk, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTD) reported a 43% jump in revenue YoY in fiscal 2021.

  • ViacomCBS Inc. (NASDAQ:VIAC) is changing its name to Paramount Global. Its revenue rose 13% YoY to US$28.56 billion in fiscal 2021.  

  • TTD stock fell 7.33% in one year, while VIAC fell 39% in the same period. 

Shares of technology company Trade Desk Inc (NASDAQ:TTF) and mass media firm ViacomCBC Inc (NASDAQ (VIAC) plunged more than 5% and 20%, respectively, in intraday trading on Wednesday after reporting fourth-quarter and fiscal 2021 results. 

The sharp fall comes after the companies reported significant revenue growth last year. 

Here is a look at their quarterly and annual results. 

The Trade Desk, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTD) 

Its stock fell 5.93% to US$75.745 at 10:46 am ET after the results on Wednesday. The technology company provides a cloud-based platform to ad-buyers.

Fourth quarter:

Its revenue was US$395.6 million, up 24% YoY in the quarter. The net income was US$8 million or US$0.02 per share diluted against US$151.9 million or US$0.31 per share diluted a year ago.

Full-year FY2021:

Revenue increased by 43% YoY to US$1,196 million, and the net income came in at US$137.8 million in FY21. Its EPS diluted was US$0.28, and non-GAAP EPS diluted was US$0.91. 

The company said it retained around 95% of its customers last year. The company had partnered with Publicis, Xandr, Throttle, FuboTV, Acuity Ads, AMC Networks, Snowflake, etc., to advance its business, and launched a new media trading platform called Solimar in July.

 It also announced a partnership with Walmart to launch a new DSP-based platform in the first quarter of FY 2022.

Outlook for first quarter FY 2022:

 The company expects revenue of at least US$303 million and adjusted EBITDA of around US$91 million in the first quarter. The Trade Desk’s current market capitalization is US$34.8 billion, with a P/E ratio of 127.11.

ViacomCBS Inc. (NASDAQ:VIAC)

 It declared its Q4 and full-year FY2021 results during the extended-hours trading on Tuesday.

Fourth quarter:

 Viacom added 9.4 million global streaming subscribers in the quarter, led by Paramount+ and saw 84% growth YoY in the streaming subscription revenue.

The revenue was US$8 billion, up 16% YoY in the quarter, beating estimates, according to EODHD/Others. The streaming revenue rose 48% YoY to US$1.3 billion.

The operating income rose to US$2.66 billion from US$1.08 billion a year earlier. The EPS diluted was US$3.05, and the adjusted EPS diluted was US$0.26.

Full-year FY2021:

 The revenue came in at US$28.56 billion, up 13% YoY, and the operating income was US$6.29 billion. The EPS diluted grew 79% to US$6.69 from US$3.73 per share diluted in FY2020.

The adjusted EPS was US$3.48, compared to US$4.20 in FY2020.

On Tuesday, ViacomCBS announced to change its name to Paramount Global, effective from Wednesday, and unveiled plans for new content, products, and international expansion.

The global media company owns CBS, MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and other networks. It aims to add 100 million DTC subscribers and generate US$9 billion in revenue by 2024.

 ViacomCBS Inc’s current market capitalization is US$18.3 billion, and the P/E ratio is 4.09. Its stock slid 21.35% to US$28.305 at 10:46 am ET on Wednesday.

 Bottomline

The TTD stock fell 7.33% in one year, while VIAC fell 39% in the same period. The stock market has been volatile lately. Investors should carefully evaluate the companies before investing in stocks.
