MetaMask Launches Crypto Payment Card in the US
MetaMask, a popular self-custodial crypto wallet, has introduced a new way for users to spend their cryptocurrency holdings. Through a limited pilot program, MetaMask has launched a crypto payment card in the United States. The pilot offers early access to users who can make purchases at both physical stores and online, where Mastercard is accepted.
Limited Pilot Program
The MetaMask Card is being rolled out as part of a limited pilot in the US. While it is available in most areas, residents of New York and Vermont will not be able to access the card initially and will need to join a waitlist. The card functions like a crypto debit card, allowing users to convert their cryptocurrency into fiat currency at the point of sale.
Lorenzo Santos, Senior Product Manager at ConsenSys, shared that this card is a significant step towards reducing the friction between blockchain technology and real-world commerce. The launch of this card represents an important shift in making cryptocurrencies more accessible for everyday use.
Partnership with Crypto Life and Mastercard
MetaMask has partnered with Crypto Life, a card program manager working with Mastercard, to bring this payment solution to life. This collaboration allows MetaMask users to seamlessly convert their crypto holdings into local fiat currencies during transactions. Through the card, users can make purchases in the same way they would with a regular debit card, further bridging the gap between the digital and physical economy.
Global Expansion Plans
While the initial rollout is limited to the US, the MetaMask Card is already available in several international markets, including the EU, UK, Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia. The card is issued in partnership with the Baanx Platform, a fintech firm that specializes in cryptocurrency and digital payment solutions. MetaMask plans to expand the card’s availability to other regions after the pilot phase.
This step forward is seen as an effort to make cryptocurrencies more practical for daily use, encouraging wider adoption among both casual users and businesses. By offering a crypto payment card, MetaMask is positioning itself as a leader in the evolving crypto-finance ecosystem.
