UK and US Equities Inched Lower; Shares of Pearson Zoomed by 13.97%

US Markets: Broader indices in the United States traded in red - particularly, the S&P 500 index traded 43.32 points or 1.13 per cent lower at 3,806.30, Dow Jones Industrial Average Index contracted by 330.83 points or 1.07 per cent lower at 30,606.21, and the technology benchmark index Nasdaq Composite traded lower at 13,519.90, down by 106.17 points or 0.78 per cent against the previous day close (at the time of writing, before the US market close at 10:30 AM ET).

US Market News: The major indices of Wall Street traded in the red territory amid announcements regarding Federal Reserve policy and big technology companies declaring their earning results. The Mortgage Bankers Association had reported a decline of 4.1% in the U.S. mortgage applications for the week ending 22 January 2021 compared to the prior week. Among the gaining stocks, shares of Microsoft grew by 2.22% after it had reported first-quarter earnings more than the consensus estimates. Shares of Allstate Corp went up by 0.46% after it would sell its life insurance arm to Blackstone for USD 2.8 billion. Among the declining stocks, shares of Advanced Micro Devices dropped by 3.54% due to the worries regarding margin growth. Shares of Boeing went down by 3.40% after it reported an FY20 net loss of USD 11.9 billion. Shares of AT&T dropped by 0.34% after it had reported a fourth-quarter net loss of USD 13.88 billion.

European News: The London and European markets traded in the red territory as investors were keenly waiting for policy announcement from the Federal Reserve. The UK Covid-19 death tolls had crossed 1,00,000 mark. Among the gaining stocks, Strix Group shares grew by 3.21% after it provided a modest growth after tax for FY20.  Wynnstay Group shares jumped by 2.74% after it raised the dividend payment for the financial year ending 31 October 2020. Brewin Dolphin Holdings shares went up by 2.03% after it had ended 2020 with record funds. Shares of Pearson had increased the most on FTSE 100 (up by 13.97%). Among the decliners, Fresnillo shares dropped by 10.10% after it forecasted a drop in gold production. Tullow Oil shares went down by 7.68% after it warned of lower output in 2021.
