Home drone delivery service Wing has announced that it will temporarily shut down its operations as the ravens were attacking the drones passing through their nests.
Wing is run by Google’s parent company Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG). The company has been operating drones in Canberra since 2019. Wing delivers takeaway food, medicines and coffee by drone covering around 100 homes in Canberra, after getting the regulatory approval by the aviation authority of Australia.

In a written statement to customers, Wing said that it has identified some birds in the customers’ areas which were demonstrating territorial behaviours and attacking at the moving objects.
The residents of Harrison, a suburb in Australia’s Canberra, witnessed a raven attacking a drone delivering coffee. The whole incident was captured by a resident – Ben Roberts, who was waiting for his coffee. The video was later shared on various social media platforms.
Moreover, this wasn’t the first case of birds attacking on the flying machines. Recently, large ravens nearly brought down at least two such drones in the area, that’s why the company was forced to temporarily suspend its drone operations.
While the drone deliverer has paused its services, bird experts are assessing the birds’ behaviour to ensure their welfare.
The increased demand for drone deliveries due to Canberra’s ongoing coronavirus lockdown, has impacted the local nesting season.
Last year, Wing saw a 500% increase in its global deliveries and has continued to grow at a similar rate. However, due to the halted operations, the investors might need to be little bit careful, until the situation comes under control.
