Summary

  • As the EV industry bloomed, vehicle creators decided to step up and bring EV pickup trucks.
  • Tesla CEO Elon Musk wants to primarily introduce a more renewable source of energy, while others believe that consumers want a lot more than doing the environment “a favour”.
  • With many new trucks being planned for the next couple of years, potential buyers should stay tuned and read more about a few truck models.

Electric cars are likely to replace traditional vehicles in the upcoming years, as the demand for sustainable energy grows by the day. However, companies such as Tesla do believe that humanity can get out of the mess it created. Electric vehicles appear to be the first step in tackling climate change, so why not continue with producing electric trucks too?

Is global warming enough of a reason?

Consumers in general would probably not purchase a product entirely for its sustainability. In capitalism, most buyers need to get something more in return when they purchase a product.

So, what could be the real reason for so many electric trucks in the making?

General Motors (GM) thinks that outdoorsy people (and those who want to look like that) might be the most important customers. EVs have proved to need less upkeep in the long run, hence the feature might be cost-effective for many EV customers.

However, getting a pickup truck is different than buying a regular car. Statistics have shown that trucks have become almost as popular as SUVs, the most known family car. Pickup trucks in America are currently the most sold vehicle, as Americans are famously into camping and exploring their wildlife environment.

What are the advantages of EVs?

Electric vehicles, especially electric pickup trucks, have far more advantages than the internal combustion engine rivals.

For example, EVs are fast and strong while have fewer moving parts. They do cost more when purchasing but are likely to be a better investment long-term. GM oversaw these advantages and thought how Americans and the rest of the world could contribute to the EV industry even more by introducing a brand-new electric Hummer.

GMC Hummer EV

General Motors presented a new electric truck after more than ten years of not creating any new Hummers.

The modern edition of a pickup Hummer EV was introduced on 20 October, revealing what will be so special about the electric vehicle. The vehicle is coming to the market in autumn 2022.

For the price of US$112,595, GMC Hummer EV brings a tri-motor format and a three-second acceleration for 0-60 mph. The EV truck promises 1,000 horsepower and a hands-free assistant.

A feature that will distinguish GMC Hummer EV from other electric trucks is a CrabWalk mode, meaning the truck will be able to move zig-zag due to a special tyre system. Fortnite maker Epic Games took care of screen visuals so gamers might enjoy the truck the most.

This version is by far the most expensive compared to other Hummers that were introduced. A more affordable version will cost US$89,995 and will be available in 2023, while the cheapest version (US$79,995) is coming in 2024.

Tesla Cybertruck

Tesla introduced the most futuristic-looking EV truck, Tesla Cybertruck, which should be on sale in a couple of years. The manufacturing is expected to start late next year and will be a lot more affordable than new Hummers.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk did promise cheaper electric vehicles for the future and with Cybertruck, he seems to have lived up to his promises. The lowest price for one-motor truck starts at US$39,900, while the most advanced tri-motor trucks begin at US$69,900.

Texas Gigafactory in Austin will be the primary Cybertruck manufacturer, starting with the most affordable vehicles in spring 2021.

Nikola Badger

Another Guardians of the Galaxy truck revealed by Nikola Badger is supposed to hit the market a bit later than expected, due to fraud charges against the company.

However, the new Nikola Badger will have a hydrogen-fuelled battery, which is remarkable and innovative on its own. The truck promises a 600-mile range and 300 miles will be powered by the battery alone. The horsepower is slightly less powerful than Tesla and Hummer – 906 hp.

If the current fraud allegations made by the SEC go away, General Motors are a big candidate for the next collaboration. GM would create, verify and build the new Badgers.

0-60mph will be achieved in 2.9 seconds (same as Tesla’s Cybertruck), but potential buyers will need to wait a bit longer due to court and pandemic difficulties.

Many car manufacturers like Ford, Bollinger, Lordstown, Atlis, and others are also expecting to release their own pickup EV trucks. Most of them are believed to reach the market in the next couple of years, so future buyers – stay tuned!
