WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram suffered a brief global outage on Friday, leading to many users resorting to Twitter to air their frustrations.

However, the services were resumed shortly after 11:00 pm IST. The cause for the outage was not immediately known. Facebook has not commented on the sudden breakdown of its services yet.

The Menlo Park, California-based company had purchased WhatsApp and Instagram in 2010.

Although such occurrences are rare, some users nevertheless took to Twitter to narrate their experience. WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger users could not send or receive messages, while Instagram followers said they could not refresh their pages. Surprisingly, Facebook was working fine.

Some users complained that they received a peculiar error message when they tried to log into the apps - WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger.

The social media giant has been facing increased scrutiny from various governments over a host of issues, from privacy concerns, market monopoly to news sharing on its platform.

Early this month, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) had opened an antitrust motion against Facebook over its alleged monopoly tactics. Several state attorneys had also joined the motion.

The administrators cited the purchases of WhatsApp and Instagram to back their claim that the company prefers to buy out potential rivals to eliminate any future competitions in the market.

Facebook has also drawn flak from the Australian government recently after it rejected a proposal that will require it to enter into an agreement with the news publishers for using their content on its platform. It had briefly banned Australian media content in protest.
