Summary

  • Earlier in 2017, creation of over 8,300 jobs and NZ$1 billion business were anticipated from the America’s Cup event.
  • This year, many overseas travellers have not been able to reach New Zealand due to coronavirus-caused travelling restrictions.
  • However, local tourists are likely to throng the area and help boost the businesses.

According to MBIE (Ministry of Business Innovation & Employment) in 2017, the America’s cup could have brought business worth $1billion, boosting the economy and create as many as 8,300 new jobs.

As per the latest report, many overseas travellers have not been able to reach New Zealand this year due to coronavirus-caused travelling restrictions, but the arrival of Kiwi natives from different parts of the nation has compensated for it.

Also, this year, there are no overseas fans and travellers hence, so far, it has been a lukewarm ticket booking response towards Prada Cup.

Eateries around the area have also taken a hit because of the lack of international tourists. However, they are expecting to witness more people during both Prada Cup (15 January) and America’s Cup in March.

Other benefits such events provide are -- an international platform to local talents, as well as boosting the country’s morale, instilling the spirit of national pride. Different sectors to gain from the event consist of services and manufacturing (boat construction and super yatch repairs).

The sector that could have really benefitted from the event are tourism and hospitality. During such events, travellers from South and North Island visit the place.

There is anxious anticipation in regard to whether there will be good footfall at the Prada Cup. Also, the event would start on Friday (15 January 2020) at the Hauraki Gulf.

The first two teams to lock horns here are American Magic and Team UK, the winner among whom shall compete with Team New Zealand in the main regatta to be held in the month of March this year.

Team New Zealand’s Boat takes a hit in the practice game

Recently, TNZ (Team New Zealand) boat had a brush with trouble in their practice game. Ahead of the America’s cup, TNZ’s boat capsized, and took a tumble into the water. Playing against INEOS Team UK, the Kiwi boat lost control near the bottom gate.

In a different boat, at a different location, this hit could have been devastating for the boat. However, thanks to the design of the boat, it escaped the incident unscathed.

With the beginning of the America’s Cup 2021, all eyes are set on which team is capable of winning it. In the practice race between INEOS Team UK and Team New Zealand, the latter fared poorly.

Thus, going into the competition, most teams are trying their best to prepare for the games, beginning Friday with the famous Prada Cup series being the first.
