Based on research studies from the auto industry firms, most Australians would consider buying an EV as their next car, but a significant number of them find EVs costly. However, the recent surge in global crude oil and natural gas prices has encouraged Australians to opt for EVs, which seems to be a relatively cheaper alternative.

Although EVs have higher upfront costs, they are relatively more economical than internal combustion engine cars. Furthermore, the presence of solar panels in households may provide additional cheap electricity to charge those EVs.
Tesla is leading the EV revolution in Australia
In the first quarter of 2022, Tesla pulled off a remarkable feat related to the sales of its Model 3 sedan in Australia. The company has sold 4417 units of the same, making it the bestselling EV car in the country, as per the latest VFACTS report.

The Model 3 has accounted for almost two-thirds of total Australian electric car sales so far in 2022. Notably, Tesla’s Model 3 is quite ahead of Audi (2713) and Lexus (2088) in the luxury sales segment and is trailed by Mercedes-Benz EQA and Hyundai Kona Electric, which sold 318 and 304 cars, respectively.

Hyundai Ioniq EV is also in the race, with 206 units sold in 2022, while Porche and Kia sold 160 and 141 units, respectively.
Bottom Line
Electric vehicles have become the new-age cars as they don't produce any type of pollution and are eco-friendly. Even though the cost of EVs is relatively higher, they offer a relatively economical run. Australians might not be leading the EV transition race in the world, however, with March 2022 being the best month ever for EV sales in Australia, it does seem that Aussies are getting serious about going electric like never before.
