- A record number of 1.4 million Canadians received Employment Insurance (EI) in October (seasonally adjusted basis), reported Statistics Canada.
- This is thrice the figure of 446,000 in February. EI beneficiaries had earlier peaked in June 2009 at 822,000.
- Between March and April, EI beneficiaries had shifted to Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB). Therefore, it reached a low of 160,000 in August this year.
- Labour Force Survey (LFS) shows there were 1.8 million people unemployed in October. Of these, 1.5 million were actively looking for job and 300,000 with a connection to a job had either been temporarily laid off or were about to embark on new job in future.
- The federal government introduced temporary changes to the EI program in September this year.
- At 14.3 per cent, Quebec had the highest EI beneficiaries qualifying of under the new EI rules, followed by New Brunswick, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Alberta recorded lowest EI beneficiaries at 8.1 per cent.
- Youth aged 15 to 24 accounted for the highest recipients EI at 19.1 per cent.
- Women made up for of all regular EI beneficiaries between February-to-October. They accounted for 49.8 per cent of regular EI beneficiaries in October.
