Tech Bytes: Cards Against Humanity Files $15 Million Trespassing Lawsuit Against SpaceX

Seven years ago, Cards Against Humanity (CAH), the party card game manufacturer, made headlines by inviting its customers to purchase a share of a parcel of land along the U.S.-Mexico border. This initiative emerged in response to the Trump Administration's plans to build a wall in that area. Approximately 150,000 individuals participated, each contributing a nominal fee to join in a form of political activism. This collective effort successfully cordoned off the undeveloped land, preventing any construction activities intended for the wall.

Recently, CAH has turned to its backers again, this time calling upon them to support a lawsuit against SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk. The suit stems from allegations that SpaceX has been trespassing on this private land, reportedly dumping gravel, equipment, and other debris without permission.

The company is seeking $15 million in damages and has proposed to share the net proceeds among the original subscribers, with a potential payout of up to $100 each. This approach underscores CAH's commitment to its supporters, ensuring that those who contributed to the initial land purchase remain involved in the legal proceedings.

According to CAH, SpaceX began storing equipment and materials on the land while constructing a nearby project. When confronted about the ownership of the land, SpaceX allegedly presented a limited-time offer for less than half of its value. In a characteristic response that reflects its irreverent humor, CAH suggested a rather graphic rebuttal to Musk's offer and prepared for a legal battle.

The lawsuit not only addresses the issue of trespassing but also claims damages to the vegetation on the land and to CAH's reputation. A statement from CAH emphasizes the importance of protecting its image as a company that follows through on bold promises. The dedicated lawsuit website, titled ‘ElonOwesYou100Dollars.com,’ articulates CAH's motivations: “Why do we need to do this? Even if Musk un-f****s our land, that doesn’t un-f*** the damage he’s done to our reputation.”

CAH asserts that the financial compensation, while helpful, cannot fully address the emotional toll taken on its supporters, who have witnessed what they describe as the degradation of their once-pristine land. The company emphasizes its dedication to safeguarding the interests of its backers and reaffirming its position against what it perceives as the encroachment of wealthy individuals and their projects.

As of now, SpaceX has not publicly responded to the allegations. Musk, known for his active engagement on social media, particularly X (formerly Twitter), has yet to comment on the situation. This legal confrontation adds another layer to the ongoing narrative of corporate accountability and the influence of grassroots activism in today's socio-political landscape.
