The firefighting efforts in Western Australia’s Pilbara region have received a significant boost with the delivery of a state-of-the-art Light Tanker to the Karratha Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service (VFRS). The $275,000 tanker, provided by the Western Australian Government, is part of a broader commitment to improving emergency response capabilities across the region.
Designed to protect volunteers during operations, the tanker includes features such as radiant heat shields, burn-over blankets, and an automated vehicle location system. This advanced equipment ensures both efficiency in handling emergencies and the safety of those on the frontline.
Over the past two years, Karratha VFRS has responded to more than 450 fire incidents, with mining areas not exempt from the threat of bushfires. Mining companies, crucial to the region's economy, have faced disruptions due to fires near operational sites.
In November 2023, Rio Tinto (ASX:RIO) evacuated workers from its Silvergrass mine for the second time in 24 hours as firefighters battled a nearby bushfire. Shortly after, a blaze halted ore processing at the Wodgina mine, operated by Mineral Resources (ASX:MIN), one of the largest hard-rock lithium mines globally.
Past incidents highlight the vulnerability of mine sites to bushfires. A lightning strike in 2018 triggered a massive blaze at Fortescue’s (ASX:FMG) Solomon hub, impacting approximately 80,000 hectares of land. Similarly, in 2017, a fire broke out at BHP’s (ASX:BHP) Mt Whaleback site, showcasing the recurring risks mining operators face.
Emergency Services Minister Stephen Dawson emphasized the importance of such investments, noting that this new tanker complements a broader $2 million funding package for the Karratha brigade. This includes $1 million allocated for upgrading the Karratha VFRS station and $813,000 for an Urban Pumper Heavy Rescue vehicle.
Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Darren Klemm highlighted the essential role of Karratha VFRS in safeguarding communities across Pilbara and beyond. He added that advanced equipment like the Light Tanker not only enhances response capabilities but also ensures that volunteers are well-protected in challenging situations.
Established in 1973, Karratha VFRS handles a range of critical services, including road crash rescues, HAZMAT operations, and firefighting. This latest addition underscores the region’s commitment to enhancing safety and protecting lives and assets against the ever-present threat of fires in Pilbara.
