Orion Minerals Ltd (ASX:ORN,JSE: ORN) has successfully obtained a crucial water use licence from South Africa’s Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) for its Okiep Copper Project (OCP) located in the Northern Cape Province. This Integrated Water Use Licence (IWUL) is essential for advancing the Flat Mines Project, which is a key component of the broader Okiep Copper Project.
Details of the IWUL Approval
The IWUL, issued to New Okiep Mining Company (Pty) Ltd, covers the Flat Mines Project and includes approval for the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) design. The licence, valid for 20 years under the National Water Act, Act 36 of 1998, represents the final major permitting milestone required to move the project forward to construction and production.
Pathfinder Project for Okiep Copper District
The Flat Mines Project is pivotal in Orion’s strategy to exploit the mineral potential of its holdings in the Okiep Copper District. The project encompasses three key deposits—Flat Mine North, Flat Mine East, and Flat Mine South—containing a combined 9.3 million tonnes at 1.3% copper. A bankable feasibility study (BFS) is currently being finalized, with completion expected in the December quarter of 2024. This study will target processing 780,000 tonnes of run-of-mine material annually over a 12-year mine life.
Drilling and Incremental Growth
Orion is actively drilling within a 7.5-kilometre radius of the Flat Mines Project to support its incremental growth strategy. The completion of the BFS and securing project funding are the next steps before construction can commence.
Regulatory Approvals and Next Steps
The IWUL approval follows the rezoning of the relevant area of the Mining Right by the Nama Khoi Local Municipality, in line with the Spatial Planning and Land Use Management Act (SPLUMA). With these approvals in place, Orion is positioned to move forward with the Flat Mines Project’s construction, which will include the development of a central concentrator plant for the OCP.
