Highlights

  • MTM Critical Metals (MTM) achieves a 93% average conversion rate of rare earth elements (REEs) to chlorides.
  • Single-step Flash Joule Heating technology delivers a 95% impurity reduction in REE concentrates.
  • Exciting year ahead with a strong pipeline and key milestones expected through 2025.

MTM Critical Metals (ASX:MTM), a leading player in rare earth elements (REE) processing, has marked a significant breakthrough in the efficiency of its innovative Flash Joule Heating (FJH) technology. The company has successfully achieved a 93% average conversion rate of REEs to chlorides, surpassing previous results and offering a step forward in rare earth extraction.

This achievement stands as a major improvement in the processing of REEs and solidifies the potential of the FJH technology to revolutionize the industry. The breakthrough eliminates key impurities from REE concentrates in a single step, achieving a remarkable 95% reduction in impurities. This development highlights the robust and versatile nature of MTM's technology, as it effectively chlorinates all 17 REEs, signaling a promising future for the company's technological advancements.

MTM’s progress extends beyond this singular success. The company is steadily advancing its plans for a demonstration plant, set to be completed by February 2025. The design will be followed by procurement, construction, and commissioning phases, showcasing MTM's commitment to scaling its processing solution. In parallel, testing programs on diverse critical metal feedstocks such as lithium and e-waste will further validate FJH’s efficiency and potential, reinforcing the broad application of this breakthrough.

In addition to technical achievements, MTM is actively working toward strategic partnerships and non-dilutive funding avenues. As the company moves closer to its commercialization goals, updates on binding offtake agreements are expected, which will be key drivers in building toward sustainable revenue generation.

The successful demonstration of high-efficiency rare earth processing also offers economic and environmental benefits. The FJH technology improves rare earth extraction by using a refined chloride, which is far more valuable and manageable compared to traditional REE-sulphates. Moreover, the process is significantly less energy-intensive, requiring less water and chemicals than conventional methods, reducing environmental impacts while increasing economic viability.

CEO Michael Walshe expressed confidence in the technology’s potential, emphasizing that the FJH method represents a more sustainable alternative to conventional REE processing. Given the geopolitical dynamics surrounding rare earth supply chains, MTM is positioned to be a major player in reshaping the global market, reducing dependency on traditional supply routes.

With strong momentum, MTM Critical Metals is poised for a transformative year, with many exciting updates to come throughout 2025.
