  • New topical gel demonstrates strong results in infection control
  • Study shows improved healing rates in burn wound models
  • Backed by a US Department of Defense research program

Recce Pharmaceuticals Ltd (ASX:RCE) has shared new pre-clinical findings for its RECCE® 327 Topical Gel (R327G), showing strong antimicrobial action and faster recovery rates in infected burn wounds. The research, part of the company’s collaboration with the US Department of Defense burn wound program, underlines its commitment to addressing critical health challenges caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

The study focused on combating dangerous pathogens, including Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa — both listed by the World Health Organization among the most concerning drug-resistant bacteria.

Standing Out in Wound Infection Studies

R327G’s antimicrobial performance stood out when tested in burn wound infection models. Compared to untreated cases and a standard topical antibiotic, the gel delivered significantly reduced bacterial presence in wounds. Its once-daily application also offered an advantage over treatments requiring more frequent use.

In addition to targeting bacteria effectively, R327G demonstrated measurable benefits in wound recovery. The treated wounds showed improved contraction rates across the test period, reflecting a positive impact on the healing process. Importantly, the gel was well tolerated, with no negative effects observed during the study.

A Step Forward in Tackling Resistant Infections

The research forms part of a larger initiative supported by a grant and a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases. This partnership aims to develop treatments for severe burn wounds sustained in both military and civilian environments, where infection risk is high.

Recce Pharmaceuticals is building a pipeline of synthetic anti-infectives designed to address bacterial and viral resistance. Alongside R327G, its portfolio includes:

  • RECCE® 327 – intravenous and topical therapy for bacterial infections

  • RECCE® 435 – oral therapy for bacterial infections

  • RECCE® 529 – antiviral therapy

All candidates are broad-spectrum, patented compounds with mechanisms of action aimed at overcoming resistance. The company’s automated manufacturing facility supports both current trials and future production needs.

For those tracking developments in listed healthcare innovators, details on the ASX 200 index provide context on the broader market landscape.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What makes R327G different from existing topical treatments?

  • Is this treatment available for public use?
Currently, R327G is in the research and development stage, undergoing pre-clinical studies before progressing to human trials.
  • Why is tackling antibiotic resistance important in burn wound care?
Severe burns often lead to infections from resistant bacteria, making recovery harder. Effective treatments like R327G can reduce complications and improve outcomes.
