  • Positive results from Phase II trial of Recce 327 topical gel
  • No serious adverse events reported, meeting all safety and efficacy endpoints
  • Phase III trial for diabetic foot infections approved in Indonesia

Recce Pharmaceuticals (ASX:RCE) has made significant strides in addressing acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections with its innovative Recce 327 topical gel (R327G). The company recently announced promising results from its Phase II clinical trial, showcasing the potential of R327G as a novel treatment option.

Encouraging Phase II Results

The Phase II trial evaluated the efficacy and safety of R327G in 30 male and female patients suffering from bacterial skin infections. One participant withdrew due to pre-existing pain at a wound site, which was determined to be unrelated to the treatment.

At the seven-day mark, 86% of the remaining 29 patients demonstrated a successful clinical response. By the 14th day, 93% had achieved the primary efficacy endpoint. These results reinforce the effectiveness of R327G in tackling bacterial infections, potentially offering a new solution in the fight against antimicrobial resistance.

Safety and Regulatory Support

The trial successfully met all primary and secondary endpoints, including safety, tolerability, efficacy, and plasma pharmacokinetics. Importantly, no serious adverse events were reported, further strengthening the case for R327G as a safe and effective treatment.

The positive data aligns with growing regulatory emphasis on novel broad-spectrum antibiotics, particularly in response to antimicrobial resistance concerns. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has been increasingly advocating for innovative treatments in this space, highlighting the significance of Recce Pharmaceuticals' latest breakthrough.

Addressing Unmet Medical Needs

Dr. Alan Dunton, chief medical advisor at Recce Pharmaceuticals (ASX:RCE), emphasized the potential impact of R327G in meeting urgent medical needs. He highlighted its broad-spectrum nature and rapid action against diverse bacterial species, including those resistant to existing antibiotics.

Previous studies have demonstrated that R327 compounds exhibit efficacy against more than 500 clinical bacterial isolates, reinforcing their role in combating infections that currently lack effective treatments.

Phase III Trial for Diabetic Foot Infections

Building on this momentum, Recce Pharmaceuticals (ASX:RCE) secured approval from the Indonesian Drug and Food Regulatory Authority in December 2024 to launch a Phase III trial focused on treating diabetic foot infections (DFIs).

DFIs are a major cause of non-traumatic foot amputations, with studies indicating that foot ulcers precede 85% of diabetes-related amputations. The financial burden is substantial, with treatment costs in the U.S. alone reaching up to $20 billion per year.

The upcoming trial is expected to provide new hope for Indonesia’s 19.5 million adults living with diabetes. It also marks a step forward in Recce Pharmaceuticals’ broader mission to introduce innovative healthcare solutions on a global scale.

Chief executive officer James Graham highlighted the significance of the trial, noting that it represents an important milestone toward commercializing R327G and driving future profitability for the company.

With the latest Phase II results setting a strong foundation, Recce Pharmaceuticals (ASX:RCE) is well-positioned to advance its portfolio of novel anti-infective treatments, offering new possibilities in the fight against bacterial infections.
