  • Neuren gains FDA nod for crucial Phase 3 trial
  • Trial targets rare neurological disorder in children
  • Shares jump over 18% in early ASX trading

Shares of Neuren Pharmaceuticals (ASX:NEU) rallied strongly on Monday, outperforming the broader ASX 200 index, after the company announced a significant regulatory milestone in the development of one of its lead drug candidates. The biotechnology firm received a critical endorsement from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), accelerating progress toward a much-anticipated Phase 3 clinical trial.

The FDA has formally agreed on the primary outcome measures for the Phase 3 trial of NNZ-2591, a drug candidate developed by Neuren to potentially treat children with Phelan-McDermid syndrome, a rare neurodevelopmental disorder. The green light from the regulator marks a pivotal moment for the company, as this trial represents a key step in advancing the treatment to market.

According to the company, the trial is scheduled to begin in mid-2025 and is currently awaiting a final FDA review of the full study protocols. With the primary outcomes now approved, Neuren is one step closer to launching a pivotal trial that could bring transformative results for affected families and further strengthen its drug pipeline.

The market responded swiftly and positively to the update. In early trading on Monday, Neuren Pharmaceuticals (NEU) shares soared as much as 18%, reflecting investor optimism about the company’s momentum in drug development. By mid-morning, the stock was still trading strongly, up by 16.8% near 10:50am.

NNZ-2591 is a central piece of Neuren’s broader strategy focused on rare and underserved neurological conditions. The company has previously seen success with its other lead compound, trofinetide, which has also been developed for similar syndromes. This latest development underscores the potential value and promise within Neuren’s pipeline, particularly in niche therapeutic areas where treatment options remain limited.

The strong market reaction highlights growing investor interest in innovative biotech firms working on breakthrough therapies, especially those targeting rare pediatric disorders. As the mid-2025 timeline for the trial approaches, attention is likely to remain on further regulatory updates and the trial’s commencement.

The advancement of NNZ-2591 into a late-stage trial places Neuren Pharmaceuticals (NEU) in a promising position within the biotech sector, offering both clinical and commercial potential as it moves closer to delivering a novel therapy for an unmet medical need.
