Avita Medical (ASX:AVH) has achieved a significant milestone with the FDA approval of its innovative RECELL GO Mini device, an extension of its cutting-edge RECELL platform. This new mini cartridge is designed for smaller wound applications, offering a more resource-efficient and adaptable approach to treating complex injuries.
Advancing Spray-On Skin Technology
The RECELL platform, first approved in 2018 for severe burns, has undergone several advancements. In 2022, it was approved for repigmentation of vitiligo lesions, and in 2023, its use was extended to full-thickness skin defects. These injuries penetrate both the epidermis and dermis layers, often exposing bone, fat, or muscle.
The groundbreaking technology involves utilizing a small sample of a patient's own skin to create "Spray-On Skin." This innovative approach enables a 1-square-centimeter sample to treat wounds as large as 80 square centimeters. Unlike conventional healing, which typically progresses from the wound edges inward, the RECELL method stimulates healing from within the wound, promoting faster and more comprehensive recovery.
RECELL GO Mini: Tailored for Smaller Wounds
The newly approved RECELL GO Mini is specifically designed for wounds up to 480 square centimeters, making it ideal for smaller injuries. It complements the original RECELL GO system, which can treat wounds up to 1,920 square centimeters. The Mini GO uses the same processing device as the standard system but incorporates a smaller, disposable cartridge. This not only minimizes waste but also provides clinicians with a more tailored solution to address diverse patient needs.
Expanding Access and Adoption
According to Jim Corbett, CEO of Avita Medical, the introduction of RECELL GO Mini strengthens the company’s ability to meet the varying requirements of patients with full-thickness wounds. The compact design is expected to drive wider adoption of the RECELL platform, especially in trauma and burn centers.
Avita Medical (AVH) plans to roll out the RECELL GO Mini in the first quarter of 2025, initially targeting trauma and burn centers. With this development, the company continues to solidify its position as a leader in advanced wound care technology, providing innovative solutions for complex medical challenges.
